Christians on Campus - The Blackout

I've been sharing my personal experiences as a Christian on campus in a series entitled, Christians on Campus. This post is the continuation of my previous post, Christians on Campus: Global Young Leaders Conference. 

So I was about to leave New York City, sitting in my seat with the seat belt buckled, waiting for the airplane to take off to Austin via Chicago. I fell asleep. An hour later I woke up, the plane was full of noises. People were standing in the aisle, opening the luggage compartments, talking on their phones. I thought, "Wow, we got to Chicago fast!" But then I looked around, these people, their countenances didn't look so good. I actually forget how I found out what was wrong with the whole thing, yet I remember frantically trying to make a phone call to Austin, to let the people there know that there was something wrong with my departure. For the longest time, my phone would not connect. It was very strange. My mom and grandma did not have a cell phone in the U.S., so I called one of the Christians on Campus' members so that she could pass the message to my mom.

The phone call never went through. I decided to send a text message hoping that it would reach the other side, "J, there's a blackout. The whole airport's system is down, but don't worry I think my airplane is the first in line to take off because we were already heading to the runway when the blackout happened." That was August 14, 2003, the afternoon when the notorious Northeast blackout of 2003 happened. It was "the second most widespread blackout in history after the 1999 Southern Brazil blackout" (Wikipedia, 2008). But of course, at that time, I had no clue what just happened to me. 

My mom and grandma were supposed to fly to Chicago to meet me. We were going to take a tour there, but my grandma hurt her waist so they decided to stay in Austin. Thank the Lord, they didn't have to go near any of the area affected by the blackout.

    :) you should definitely find a way to "index" or categorize these "Christians on Campus" series of experiences - they are nice stories but if someone wants to read them all...

    Do you think it's hard to see though?

Summer 2012 Puerto Rico Blending Trip: The People

Please read my previous post to find out more about the island of Puerto Rico . Without a doubt, Puerto Rico has it all:  nature and culture . Yet what I enjoyed the most was meeting Christians, young and old, and having a rich fellowship with them (despite the language barrier that we had since I don't really speak Spanish). I also met a lot of college students who were affiliated with Christians on Campus. Crossing The River Jordan

(Joshua 3:17) I attended a virtual crystallization-study of the Books of Joshua, Judges, and Ruth. Like always the in-depth trainings held by Living Stream Ministry have been landmarks in my Christian life, prompting me to come to the Lord Himself to dwell on the revelations unfolded in these sessions of spoken messages. Only Lovers Can Be Mighty

Continuing from my last post on our Christian mission in choosing to be part of the mighty ones  is another quote by R. Kangas, inspired by the divine romance portrayed in Song of Songs chapter 3: "We are not trained to be mighty ones merely by being sent to a barren place to pass through one hardship after another. Rather we are trained by maintaining and nurturing our love toward our Beloved. Our Beloved is the mighty One. His love prevails... We should not allow the enthusiasm of war or the thrill of victory to interfere with our steady, developing, ongoing romance with the Lord." The mighty ones are God's army, beautiful in the Lord's eyes and terrifying to the enemy ( Song of Songs 6:4 ). Yet what's so astonishing about this army is the fact that all these ones are firstly LOVERS! MVP: The Most Valuable Person in the Lord's Eyes

Last week I wrote Only Lovers Can Be Mighty . Being a lover and a warrior are two sides of the same coin. This week though I was reminded of a fellowship I had with Mr. Danker, an older brother in the Lord, concerning: Who would be the most valuable person in the Lord's eyes? Previously I considered being a lover and being the most valuable person as pretty much identical. I mean if you're a lover to someone, then by default, aren't you the most valuable person in that someone's eyes? Our answer would, of course, be yes. Now let us consider together. If that lover of yours truly, deeply, fervently, crazily love you, but simultaneously strong in the sense of always insisting upon his/her ways, styles, concepts of values, standards, and opinions; is he/she still practically the most valuable person in your eyes?
